Minimum Expectations

To aid departments/units and their DNAs, the following outlines the abilities expected of the local network administrators by OIT Enterprise Networking.

Besides the requirements for DNAs, an academic or administrative unit has to have available additional knowledge and skills to receive an OSUNet connection.

Knowledge

Understanding of TCP/IP networks:

TCP/IP - basic understanding of IP addressing, subnetting, and the OSI network model
Basic understanding of network utilization.
IP based services such as Domain Name Service (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and the generalized TCP/IP client and server model.

Knowledge of OSUNet policies

Skills

Ability to troubleshoot common internet applications such as e-mail, news, FTP, Telnet, and WWW clients

Ability to track and resolve security incidents and user abuse

Responsibilities

Submit new or changed host names with the university hostmaster@osu.edu to have them registered in DNS

Informs department or unit of applicable statutes, university and departmental policies, and recommended practices for operations while on the network

Be able to provide information including device's administrative contact, device's location, make, model, operating system(s), IP address(es), host name, NIC MAC ID(s)

Notify the correct system administrator when contacted by the Network Security Group Incident Response Team (IRT) about a computer security incident on the unit's network.
